Per CardioGirl's request

I uploaded up handwriting sample to google docs for your viewing pleasure (displeasure) ;)

The original is acutally on engineering paper (green with grid lines) but that didn't come through on the scan. Sorry for doing it this way, I couldn't figure out how to get it to a different format and I had to leave. If I figure it out I'll switch it later. You should not need to log in or anything to open the document.

  1. (Jumps to her feet and begins a one-woman standing ovation) Buf you never let me down! That was awesome!

I, too, had a stint of trying to recreat that cool a but I never did get the hang of it and I print it the same old boring way that everyone else does.

However, I did pick up the "european" style of putting a cross through my Zs and my 7s and it has stuck for many years. I honestly can't remember when I picked that up.

I think after college sometime. But I know I saw it on someone else's hand writing and I had to have it. Now it's on autopilot and I can't not do it.

In fact, you'll see that Z in the word "lazy" on my handwritten sample shows that line. It makes me feel fancy.

Thanks again for going above and beyond, Buf!

  2. (Bowing graciously) Thank you, thank you very much.

I sometimes do that line thing too. However, I always thought it was a math / technical thing not European. I must do it more frequently now, so I can be all worldly and all. ;) I did notice the z in your post...lol

Anytime. I need to do this more but never get to it. Actually I'm going to try to start a drawing assignment today to see how it goes.

  3. hey hey hey, buf. why would you have to write in all CAPS? for clarity?

there was this girl in my school who wrote in all lowercase and it got on my nerves, but then i started doing it and it has become my signature.

i also put a line through my 7s but not the zs. i just like being different.

  4. Nat-

For some reason I read your hey hey hey in the Bill Cosby/Fat Albert voice and style, don't know if you were going for that or not...lol I guess I could have done the ReRun style instead but my default was Cos.

When writing on drafting documents, the standard convention is always all caps. Even in today's world of computer generated drawings and comments, it's still all caps. You are probably right that clarity is one of the main reasons. The other big reason is to make everything very uniform regardless of who was doing the drawing. Back in the hand drawing days, if comments or labels needed to be added or changed, it may not be done by the same person who did the initial drawing or even any of the revisions. By having a standardized writing style, the drawings would still look professional and not sloppy due to various styles of handwriting. Back then, these drawings could take an exceedingly long time to complete and often revisions would be incorporated into the originals so they wouldn't have to spend all that time starting over from scratch. The drafting department at work still has and uses a large number of hand drawn schematics for the really old pieces of equipment that are still in service. Also in addition to all caps, there is a standard way you are supposed to draw the letter. Example: for M the tops are supposed to be points not rounded and the "v" in the middle is supposed to come exactly half way down. I also seem to remember that each letter was supposed to take up the same amount of space. Example: for I you must include the top and bottom lines and they are supposed to extend sideways the same amount of space as there is between the sides of a M.

  6. Actually I thought it was black but now looking at it I would say blue. I really don't have a clue what the difference between blue and navy is....lol Is navy just a dark shade of blue? I have to admit, I tend to be very guy like when it comes to colors. I stick to the basics. :P

  8. Damn, I haven't been by in a long time if this conversation took place in the middle of August. I absolutely loved the trip back in time with Fat Albert and Rerun!

Major points for taking me back! I totally forgot about Rerun.

I too enjoy this blue. It looks like a cobalt blue, just to confuse the issue of blue and navy. I don't know the difference between blue and navy, but I always thought cobalt blue had a touch of gray.

You need to post again, woman. Or I'll have to start an ongoing conversation in your comments.
